Why I Prefer Sand Coloured Paper Over Any Other Colour

Emile Vernon Poster alias Colin BradleyA lot of people hear me say on the website and podcast that I prefer to use Sand Coloured Ingres Pastel Paper by Fabriano. I prefer the paper as it has a tooth which the pastel pencil grips and blends into perfectly. But why the Sand Colour? I tried many coloured papers before the sand colour. I found green to be a little dark which influenced the colour going on top. Grey wasn't actually too bad but I felt it was a little bit dull and still influenced the colour. Sand was the only colour that really came through the pastel pencil application favourable and it worked brilliantly for portrait work. Skin tones on the sand colour is absolutely fantastic. In my live demonstrations, I used to put my own hand on the paper and it showed the warmth of the paper (the colour looked compatible with it).Even though I prefer the Sand Colour, I do encourage others to try other kinds of paper but perhaps not to buy a lot of any particular one in the beginning. Get samples of each kind and colour to see what you like best.In a picture coming up which I talk about on Podcast Episode 72, I might have to deviate from the Sand Coloured Paper to try a nighttime scene. In this instance, a darker paper would assist with the tones going on top.If you want to purchase sand colour ingres pastel paper then visit my online store.
