When to use a light touch in Pastel Pencil work
In my pastel pencil tutorials, many people will notice that sometimes I press harder when applying pastel pencil and sometimes it appears softer. But when do you press lightly and when do you press harder? When I'm doing a sky in a landscape and I'm starting off with the white, I have to push that into the paper to work it in. The reason I do this is because I'm only going to be putting a blue or another colour on top so it's not going to affect the paper. When you see me using darker colours, very often the browns or black, you'll notice that I use them a bit stronger. This is again because there is not going to be anymore colours on top, it's kind of the "final colour". As with many arts, the more experience you have, the easier this becomes. When I use lighter touches, it is usually for lighter colours, skin tones for instance. The action is a little bit like "stroking", it barely touches the paper. The reason this is because the pastel pencil is so response. In the bowl of cherries picture, I had to press quite hard with the red and fill the paper up because I knew I wouldn't be putting on anymore colours on top. Light, Medium and Hard Pressure is the key. If you are going to put on a lot of colours, don't put pressure on the first few colours. If you do, then you'll find you have shine on the paper. You can remove shine and the video below demonstrates this.
