Picking Pastel Pencils for Portrait Work

Portrait study001I have been asked many times if we stock special sets of pastel pencils for portrait work. Some manufacturers do make up these sets but they are very limited. You would certainly have to buy more individual pencils to complete a full portrait. Although they do contain the lighter colours such as white, ivory, pinks and ochre's they do not include the deeper shades - the blues, greys and browns needed for most portraits.I prefer instead to suggest a limited range of colours that will include these tones but even these do not cover every eventuality. The portrait colour range of 16 Faber-Castell Pitt Pastel Pencils I would include are: 101, 103, 132, 189, 190, 118, 225, 183, 182, 187, 283, 270, 273, 143, 177 and 181.This range would cover most portraits but as I have said there will be other colours needed if you want more subtle shades. If you would like to learn how to draw Portraits using Pastel Pencils please try my free Portrait Course or sign up to become a member of our website.
