Pastel Pencil Beach Scene Artwork Tips

Don has sent me this charming picture he has recently painted and asked for my comments and advice.I liked this picture and it was nice to see Don tackle something very different. The main problem is the background sky and water, you would have been better to have defused this area to create a softer framework for the subjects as they are so dominant a part of the picture. The emphasis changes according to the size of the subjects for instance my miniature painting 'Romance on the Beach' (inset) shows two people in a dominant landscape whereas yours shows two dominant people within a landscape, the detailed landscape on this picture takes away the point of the subject which are in conflict with each other. This could easily be sorted though by blending the area behind the subjects using your finger or a colour shaper, this could easily be sorted though by blending the area behind the subjects using your finger or a colour shaper. This will give the painting an ‘out of focus’ look a professional photographer would use in a portrait, the foreground is ideal as it is.You would also like to consider creating a little more contrast in the white shirt the man is wearing and the women’s skirt this would create a more 3D look.You can get feedback and tips on your artwork when you become a member of Colin Bradley Art.
